r/AnimalCrossing State of the Subreddit | New Moderators, New Rules, Rule Changes and Rule Feedback!

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 11:38 AM PDT

    Greetings r/AnimalCrossing!

A few weeks back we requested your feedback on the rules and general state of the subreddit. Based on the feedback, here are some changes we've made as well as some general cleaning up we did:

    New Moderators!

We've reviewed the applications and selected two new moderators: u/SchoolOfTheWolf93 and u/doodlingburrito! Give them a warm welcome :)

Thanks to all who applied, even if you weren't selected you are more than welcome to apply next time. If any applicants would like more information regarding their application, feel free to PM me.

    Rule Feedback

    Common Occurrences

Overall from the feedback, it seems that people wanted common occurrences to be enforced more. We've updated the rule to be more concise:

We've made a non-exhaustive list of what we will consider common occurrences. This list can be found here. For the most part, it just extends to common reposts mentioned in the feedback thread.

    Spoilers

The game has been out for nearly a year now, so most in-game encounters have been experienced. Additionally, there are two hemispheres which would make enforcement of spoilers a bit hard as well. So for those reasons, we're not going to require spoiler tags in most instances. However, we will now be requiring spoiler tags on hacked or datamined event items.

For example, say there's new Easter event items in the files that are not officially announced, and someone uses them in a island photo or video. We now require that these be spoiler tagged.

    Memorials

We got your feedback on Memorials and it was overwhelmingly that you think they're alright! So there will be no changes regarding these.

    Edited Screenshots

There was a lot of feedback that they would like to see some kind of rule for edited screenshots, for example editing in fake items that aren't in the game. We have decided to request that users indicate if the screenshot is edited, either by putting it in the title or a comment.

You do not need to tag simple filters such as from the in-game photo-mode. Any image editing that must be done out of the game (excluding combining multiple island screenshots) should be indicated this way.

    General Rule Cleanup

We've cleaned up the rules a tad, for example "No pictures of real life animals" falls pretty well under "Keep things Animal Crossing related", so we combined them. If you have any other feedback how the rules can be presented better or tidied up, feel free to post below.

For the most part everything's being enforced the same, but you can see some slightly improved explanations on the full rules page. If anything is confusing, let us know and we can improve it.

    Megathread updates

We're going to try freeing up a sticky slot (you only get two) and putting the Code Sharing and Questions thread in a directory, as well as link them in the menu at the top, which you should be able see now on desktop and some Reddit apps. The main worry is this might make the activity of the question thread go down slightly for people new to Reddit. It's not as intuitive, but we'll see how it goes for now.

The Q&A thread now has a FAQ page for New Horizons! Hopefuly this can help clear up some questions for new players quickly. (made by u/BookusMustardeaux and u/SchoolOfTheWolf93!)

With the free sticky slot, we are thinking of running a few themed/fun threads, so keep an eye out of those.

That's it! Please feel free to leave any thoughts below, and we're open to any feedback you have about these changes or anything regarding the subreddit at all. Hoping to make these feedback posts a more common thing.
