Having cooking be a thing would be So. Much. More. Meaningful. if villagers ate the food I gave them, instead of used it for permanent deco.

It would be a great way to build friendship without redecorating their home, and would, you know, mirror what most people actually do as a sign of friendship. No one has ever given me a wall lamp, but people have given me food they've made. And I ate it.
